I resonate immensely with your thoughts. Infact after binge watching the show (which was fun surely), I was left with an unexplained uneasy feeling. Thank you for articulating them well :)

Thanks for your note Sanskriti. I was wondering if I was being unnecessarily critical but I'm glad its resonated and to know that a lot of us feel like this about the shows we seem to inhale :)

yes there will be a better show..you should try nd watch parallel.cinema.of the late.seventirs.and eighties..that no longer exists....look.at Ankur, aaakrosh, ardh Satya, and a slew of such pictures..amazing incredible.cinema.tjar people ajbe forgotten o make nowadays..I like Hazarone khwaishain ...and some of the others..but in many ways the soaps you mention are just too too bollywoodised and too blingy.......

So well-said, Smriti. Each time I see a movie/show where the plot needs fixing, I tell myself that I'll one day re-write it for myself. Maybe that's what you should do with Bae and share with your readers. Also, to add to your mom's list - just watch episodes of Penn directed by Suhasini with brilliant actresses line Revathy, Bhanupriya and Shobana acting as good strong women. There should be 6 or 7 episodes.

I shall look those up Aunty ! Yeah I always contemplate re-writing these shows and maybe if I find qurom- I’ll actually be able to write it out for once :)

Thank you for this, Smriti. I haven't watched the show, but it sounds all too familiar. I have recently been ranting about how women are portrayed only and only through the male gaze in Bollywood. I'm tired of watching caricatures on screen.

100% Nidhi ! Almost feel like we should have a group project where we just write a script where women are not caricaturised.

Haha. Loved most of the observations, Smriti. I quite agree. Also, it’s funny how so many middle-class people are so invested in the life of this one elite person who has lost her wealth. Do the middle-class strugglers have so much time? That too in Mumbai. Found the entire premise funny and unbelievable. You just try to get by somehow when you are not born with a “golden spoon” and try to make the day’s salary without getting into trouble. You don’t become a waitress at a kid’s party or sneak into shady places to help a princess in distress.

Anyway, I hope you’ve watched Soni (Netflix) and Guilty Minds (Prime Video). Not in the same space, but pretty good in terms of portrayal of female characters.

You're so right. People in Bombay having time is also just funny !!! I have watched Guilty Minds but not Soni - will take a look at that.

You know what I feel like India is missing - something like a modern family version !

Yes. True. An indian Modern Family is going to be so cool. But I doubt it will ever be made. This one is more along the lines of Gilmore Girls and Schitt’s Creek — both of which are very convincing as a riches to rags tale. I hope we have someone making something similar when they pick such an idea.

I love how passionate you get about somethings, I can hear the 'neta' type speech happening as I read your words. Index finger and body language engaged as you as you share what many women across the globe feel, characters who define each geography. Fear not the Universe has heard your prayers, we shall wait and watch for it to deliver our ask. In the meantime, we shall drown our sorrows watching cringe.

Yay to that too

TC of your health in the meantime

Stereotyping is the name of the game. Even if you are super rich mindsets about women their career etc do not change . TV shows will cater only to the audience at large for ratings and advertisements . Maybe the audience is not willing to accept the change you suggest!! Like so many issues in the country that we are just ostriches about including my favourite .. all i want is a pavement somewhere in south delhi colonies haha... do not tire or retire.. keep stacking the ideas ......

I can't remember the last time I watched a show but I still enjoyed reading your piece and found myself nodding to everything you mentioned. Write on :))
